The one-two punch of Superhero and Super-Diva delivered a record-breaking October box office haul over the weekend. For Sony's latest Marvel Comics entry Venom, it was a best ever October opening of $80 million. This easily topped the previous record of $55.7 million posted by Gravity back in 2013. Venom also gobbled up October records overseas, delivering $125 million in 58 markets for a global debut of $205 million. Perhaps the best news for Sony is the largely positive B+ audience score from early moviegoers. Given the poor reviews and the ugly 32% score on Rotten Tomatoes, strong word-of-mouth could result in a successful long-term run for the $100 million budgeted IP.
Coming In a happy second, Warner Bros. and Bradly Cooper's remake of A Star is Born belted out $44 million on 3,686 screens. Not surprisingly, the film scored an A from exit polls and is now poised for a massive run all the way through the Oscar awards season. Warner also took third place with the animated feature, Smallfoot, which dropped a modest 38% for a $14.4 million three-day total and a domestic cume of $42 million after ten days in release.
Pagebreaks Take: Movie theaters will become even more crowded next weekend as Universal's First Man launches in 3,500 theaters and Sony's Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween knocks on 3,400 doors. Fox will also release the dark comedy Bad Times at the El Royale on approximately 2,800 screens. Aside from these opening, all eyes will be on the holds of Venom and A Star Is Born.
