Universal's Night School finished at the head of the box office class over the weekend with a $27.3 million debut. The Kevin Hart, Tiffany Haddish comedy scored well with opening day audiences, and with a modest production budget of around $29 million, should provide solid profits if it finishes its run around $60 million.
In second place, Warner Bros' animated family film, Smallfoot, discovered $23 million on about 4,100 screens. Smallfoot received a "A-" CinemaScore and also opened in 49 markets overseas, bringing its global total to about $40 million after three days.
Not to be outdone, Warner's The Nun added another $5.4 million in its fourth weekend domestically, and $16 million overseas. With a new worldwide cume of over $330 million, The Nun has now become the highest grossing film in the very successful Conjuring franchise.
Pagebreaks Take: The box office will really heat up next week with two highly anticipated releases; Warner Bros. Oscar hopeful, A Star Is Born, and Sony's latest venture into the Marvel universe, Venom.
