Universal's The House with a Clock in Its Walls topped modest expectations with $26.6 million in its debut weekend. The Jack Black family spookfest out collected Black's previous entry in the space, Goosebumps, which opened to $23.6 million back in 2015.
In second, Lionsgate's A Simple Favor dropped just 36% in its second weekend, adding $10.3 million for a ten-day cume of $32.4 million. Warner Bros. and New Line's The Nun continues to hang in there, falling 45% in its third weekend, and pushing its total domestic box office over $100 million. The Nun is the fourth film in the Conjuring series to cross $100 million, and will likely settle into the second position all time for the franchise, behind The Conjuring, which grossed $137.4 million in 2013.
Overseas, The Nun held the #1 spot for the third week in a row, bringing in over $35 million from 80 markets. The films worldwide total is just under $300 million; a massive take on a $22 budget.
PageBreaks Take: The House with a Clock In its Walls will face tougher competition next week when WB's animated Smallfoot opens on about 4,000 screens.
