20th Century Fox's The Predator debuted in the top spot over the weekend, but had the dubious honor of becoming the worst ever live-action film opening on over 4,000 screens. Predator's $24.6 million "beat out" The Mummy, which opened with $31.6 million on 4,035 theaters last summer. The Predator received a mediocre C+ CinemaScore and will now have to do some heavy lifting to make it to $50 million by the end of its run. On a $90 million production budget, that is not a good result for Fox.
Falling a dramatic 66%, Warner Bros. The Nun scared up $18.2 million in its second weekend, for a new domestic total of just over $85 million. The Nun should cross the $100 million mark by the end of next week, becoming the fourth film in the the Conjuring franchise to reach that milestone.
Lionsgate's A Simple Favor opened in third position with a better than expected $16 million. The film earned a solid B+ CinemaScore from opening day audiences, and unlike The Predator, should easily make a profit on its $20 million production budget.
Internationally, The Predator debuted in 72 markets with an estimated $30.7 million. This was not enough to scare off the second weekend of The Nun, which added $33.1 million, bringing its overseas total to an impressive $144 million, and its global total to a frightingly good $228 million
