For the third weekend in a row, Crazy Rich Asians dominated the box office, taking in a near record-breaking Labor-Day haul of $28.6 million. After 20 days of release, the Jon Chu romantic comedy has amassed $117 million, and is now easily the surprise hit of the 2018 summer season.

Swimming into second, another Warner Bros. success story, The Meg, added another $13.8 million over the four-day weekend for a total catch of $124 million in 25 days of release. With $350 million and counting overseas, the mega-shark thriller should cross the $500 million mark in total global receipts in the near future.

The only new release of the weekend, Operation Finale, landed quietly in fifth place with $9.6 million on 1,800 screens. On a more positive note, Sony's well received psychological thriller, Searching, expanded to 1,200 screens and trolled up $8 million for a solid, if not spectacular, $5,000 per screen average.

PageBreaks Take: Warner Bros. looks to continue its winning ways next weekend with the release of The Nun, the latest entry in the very profitable Conjuring franchise. The STX Jennifer Garner actioner Peppermint also opens next week, and will attempt to keep WB from grabbing the top three slots at the box office.
