Showing dazzling legs, Warner Bros. smash hit romantic comedy, Crazy Rich Asians held a remarkable 94%, bringing in $25 million over the weekend for a ten-day total of just under $77 million. With a reported $30 million production budget, the Jon Chu directed film had defied expectations every step of the way, and is fast becoming the biggest surprise of the summer.
Not to be outdone, another Warner Bros. late summer release, The Meg, continues to take a bite out prognostications, holding the 2nd place position in its third weekend with just under $13 million, a drop of only 39%. The dino-shark popcorn flick has crossed the $100 million mark domestically, and chewed up an even more impressive $300 million overseas for a total cume of over $400 million. Considering most experts predicted this Jason Stratham actioner would be dead in the water, a $500 million worldwide tally will have Warner Bros. executives fast-tracking another dip in the ocean.
Not so lucky in third, Melissa McCarthy's latest raunch-com, Happytime Murders failed to deliver on a promising premise, laughing up a paltry $9.5 million on about 3,300 screens. It's McCarthy's worst opening, and with a CinemaScore of C-, this film will be out of theaters by the middle of September.
PageBreaks Take: Look for Crazy Rich Asians to hold on to the top spot until the September 7th release of the latest Conjuring installment, The Nun, which should easily take over the crown with a $40 million plus opening weekend.
