Warner Bros. release of Crazy Rich Asians defied expectations delivering a stellar $35.2 million over its five-day premiere weekend, proving once again that the right movie, smartly marketed, with a workable production budget and a strong, diversified cast, can find a profitable place among the superhero, tent-pole behemoths. In second, another Warner Bros. release, The Meg swallowed up $21 million in its second weekend. The solid hold of 53.4% brings the ten-day cume for the super-shark actioner to $84 million. Globally, The Meg added $67 million to its overall haul, and has now reached $315 million worldwide.

On a less positive note, the Mark Wahlberg STX franchise starter Mile 22 came up short with $13.7 million on 3,500 screens, while Studio 8's family-friendly Alpha 8 was more bark than bite, scrounging up $10 million on about 2,700 screens.

PageBreaks Take: There could be some competition for Crazy Rich Asians next week when Melissa McCarthy's new comedy The Happytime Murders opens on over 3,000 screens. With a decent hold, Crazy Rich Asians could be in for a long, profitable run.
