With over $37 million, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle climbed to #1 at the weekend box office for the first time since its release on December 20th. After 19 days, the Sony hit has collected over $245 million, making it the highest grossing live action release for Kevin Hart, and the second largest live action release for Dwayne Johnson. Overseas, Jumanji added about $70 million, bringing its worldwide total to $514 million.
In second place, with a better than expected $29.6 million, Universal's Insidious: The Last Key scared up the second largest debut for the franchise. On the downside, The Last Key received a "B-" CinemaScore from opening day audiences, which was a franchise low, and might impact its long-term prospects. Internationally, Insidious took in about $20 million from 33 markets.
The force continues to be with Disney and Lucasfilm's Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which added $23.7 million to its total, pushing the film's domestic cume to a massive $573 million. The Last Jedi also brought in $64.7 million internationally, and now ranks as the 13th largest worldwide release of all-time with $1.2 billion. Fox's The Greatest Showman dropped just 11% this weekend for a third place finish of $13.8 million, and a solid domestic total of $77 million to date. Rounding out the top five, Universal's Pitch Perfect 3 belted out another $10.3 million for a domestic cume that now stands at $85.9 million.
PageBreaks Take: With its third place finish, Star Wars: The Last Jedi seems to be battling an image problem. Whispers that the film might somehow be viewed as a disappointment are growing louder in social media circles, while Disney finds itself in the almost unimaginable position of having to defend its billion dollar film. For the naysayers, two words should suffice: Justice League.
