Disney announced that it has penned a deal with Rian Johnson, director of the upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi movie, to create a new Star Wars trilogy. Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger also announced the development of a new live-action Star Wars TV series, which will run on the company’s upcoming streaming service, scheduled to launch by the end of 2019. The company is also working on new Marvel-based series, as well as series adaptions of Pixar’s Monsters Inc. and Disney Channel’s High School Musical. The new High School Musical will also play exclusively on the company's premium streaming service. The original High School Musical premiered on the Disney Channel over a decade ago, launching the careers of Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale, and a nationwide theatrical release for High School Musical 3: Senior Year.
PageBreaks Take: Disney is flexing its considerable content muscle as it prepares to go head-to-head with Netflix for streaming subscriber dollars.
