Netflix officially announced the inevitable; that the upcoming season of House of Cards will be its last. But now, facing continued fallout over the accusations by Star Trek Discovery star Anthony Rapp that Kevin Spacey made sexual advances in 1986 when Rapp was just 14, production on season 6 has been shut down.
House of Cards was just two weeks into a production schedule that would have extended well into 2018, costing Netflix and producer Media Rights Capital millions of dollars in breakage. Spacey issued a statement saying he did not remember the encounter but “If I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior.” Media Rights Capital issued a statement Monday saying they were “deeply troubled” by the allegations, and in response executives from both companies met with cast and crew “to ensure they continue to feel safe and supported.”
In an interview published by BuzzFeed News on Sunday, actor Anthony Rapp alleged that he was attending a party at Spacey’s apartment in 1986 when an inebriated 26-year-old Spacey picked him up, placed him on his bed, and climbed on top of him. Rapp was able to get away without any physical harm.
PageBreaks Take: The sexual harassment floodgates are open in Hollywood, and the fallout will continue to engulf the industry. Only one thing is certain, we shouldn't be surprised by any of the names that will surface in the upcoming days and weeks.
