Season 4 of Vikings on the History Channel wrapped in February, but for those inclined to binge during the summer months, this underrated, historically based epic drama is a feast worthy of the gods. Through the first four seasons, Vikings primarily follows the saga of the infamous Norse King Ragnar Lothbrok, who blends a brilliantly portrayed mix of savagery and political cunning as he raids and conquers large swaths of Scandinavia, England, and Northern France. Like the legend of King Arthur, Lothbrok’s actual existence is the subject of some debate, but this does not deter show creator Michael Hirst, who expertly weaves folklore and history to produce a tapestry of unforgettable characters, action-packed story lines, and stunning visuals.
As the lead character, Travis Fimmel’s Lothbrok is masterful. He is both fierce, and surprisingly tender, strong of will, but prone to bouts of impulse. That the audience can never discern Fimmel’s own idiosyncrasies from those of the character are a testament to the depth and scope of his performance. Equally complex are Lothbrok’s warrior wife, Lagertha, and ship-building confidant Floki, wonderfully played by Katheryn Winnick and Gustaf Skarsgard. These actors are singled out, but the core of Vikings strength is the power of the ensemble cast, which like a mighty army produces wave after wave of heroic performances.
Season 5 of Vikings is scheduled to begin in late November, and without spoiling any of the previous episodes, the cast will include some new faces. One thing for certain, under the guiding hand of Michael Hirst, the series is sure to take on and conquer fresh new territory, as the sons of Lothbrok pillage and plunder their way around the globe.
