The 2017 summer box office season is mercifully coming to a close, and futility records will continue to fall...and fall...and fall. What has already been a dismal three months will look even worse next week, as no new films will debut over Labor Day for the first time in 25 years. Sony will re-release Steven Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind into 901 locations, but this will be hard pressed to crack the top ten. Overall, the lackluster summer should finish down about 15% from last year, with total ticket sales at the lowest level since 1992.

Pagebreaks Take: On the positive side, the summer of 2018 is going to be huge, with Avengers, Hans Solo, Jurassic World, Incredibles, and Deadpool all rolling out between May and September.
