A remake of William Golding's literary classic Lord of the Flies is reportedly in development at Warner Bros., and this adaptation is creating a social media firestorm. According to Producers/Directors Scott McGehee and David Siegel, this "contemporized" version will include an all-girl cast. At first glance, the idea seems preposterous. As any middle-school English student can tell you, the central theme of Golding's masterpiece is the innate toxicity of unbridled masculinity. Clearly, an island full of young girls would create an entirely different dynamic. And that, undoubtedly, would be the point. There have been a number of stories on film and television that have examined the psychology of female cliques - think Heathers or even Pretty Little Liars - and the absence of any male interaction and the heightened emotional stress of day-to-day survival could offer an interesting perspective on a social construct. The issue is not so much the concept. What would happen if we put a group of - fill in the blank - together on a deserted island is a worthy, though not particularly novel, concept. Of greater concern is the idea that this study of female interaction will be written and directed by two men. Fresh of the success of Wonder Woman, you would think that Warner Bros. would have a new appreciation of the importance of gender identity in creating a fresh and genuine female-centric universe. One can only hope that if they are serious about this project, WB executives will attach a creative team that is more representative of the subject matter.

PageBreak Takes: This project is in the very early stages of development, and there is still plenty of time to alter course on what could otherwise turn into a PR nightmare.
