The Jetsons may soon be coming to ABC. The network has ordered a pilot based on the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon, which will be formatted as a multi-camera sitcom set 100 years in the future. Robert Zemeckis is on board to executive produce, along with Gary Janetti, best known for shows like Family Guy and Will & Grace. Warner Bros. Television will produce in association with Nickelby Inc.
The original Jetsons animated series included only 24 episodes, which aired on ABC from 1962-1963 as a companion piece to The Flintstones. The series was later revived by Hanna-Barbera in 1985, and 41 new episodes were produced. Along with the television version, the animated Jetsons: The Movie was released in theaters in 1990. In 2017, a direct-to-DVD feature entitled The Jetsons & WWE: Robo-WrestleMania! was released.
PageBreaks Take: Exciting but dangerous. Retro television shows, especially live-action adaptations of animated classics, have a history of flopping (we are still recovering from the Flintstones Movie). The creators will also need to seriously update the source material as Rosie the Robot will look like a Brookstone reject in today's world.
