While other studios are busy licking their wounds, Warner Bros. is quietly having a very strong summer. This in spite of a horrendous start, which saw the ill-fated King Arthur reboot open to a less than regal $15 million. Warner has since struck gold with the $400 million, Gal Gadot/Patty Jenkins phenomenon Wonder Woman, and has followed that up with two solid hits in Dunkirk and Annabelle: Creation. Those last two films finished 1-2 at the box office this weekend, with Annabelle taking first place in its opening frame, scaring up an outstanding $35 million. In its fourth week, Dunkirk added another $11 million, bringing its domestic cume to $153 million and its global total to $364 million, with large markets such as China and Japan still to come.
Not as fortunate, Sony saw weekend numbers for The Dark Tower fall a bleak 59% to about $8 million. In two weeks, the film has brought in just $34 million, which will likely kill any chance of further installments in the gunslinger series. Overall, the top twelve films dropped 6% for the week, and the summer season is down a chilly 12% from 2016. The Hitman's Bodyguard and Logan Lucky will look to turn things around this weekend, with both films opening wide on August 18th.
