The dogs days hit the North American box office hard this weekend, with the top twelve movies bringing in just over $111 million, the lowest total of the summer. Topping the list with a tepid $19 million was Sony's The Dark Tower, the much anticipated adaptation of the popular Stephen King sci-fi series. The Idris Elba/Matthew McConaughey film was skewered by critics, earning a very rotten 19% on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences didn't enjoy the movie much more, giving it a "B" CinemaScore.

Also struggling, Aviron's Kidnap, starring Halle Berry, could only hide away $10 million in its first weekend of release, while the nationwide expansion of Kathryn Bigelow's critical acclaimed drama Detroit failed to attract a wide audience, managing only $7 million on over 3,000 screens.

On the positive side, Christopher Nolan's war epic, Dunkirk, dropped a very respectable 36% in its third weekend of release, adding $17 million to its coffers - good enough for second place. Dunkirk has now brought in $133 million in North America, and shows no sign of slowing down as it rolls into award season. Internationally, Dunkirk has added $181 million-to-date, for a worldwide total of $314 million.

Also of note, Wonder Woman finally dropped out of the top ten, but still managed $2.3 million in its 10th week. The Warner Bros. smash hit now sits just under $400 million in North America and around $800 worldwide.
