Warner Bros. and Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk finished number one at the weekend box office for the second week in a row, fighting off Sony's new animated feature, The Emoji Movie, which had to settle for runner-up. Dunkirk dropped just 47% from its $51 million opening, adding $27 million for a ten-day total of $101 million. With limited August competition and stellar reviews, Dunkirk should enjoy an excellent run that could carry the film right through award season.
Meanwhile, The Emoji Movie will have to fight off abysmal reviews and poor word-of-mouth if it expects to add significantly to its $25 million weekend take. Close on Emoji's heels for third place was Universal's R-rated comedy Girls Trip, which added another $20 million to bring its total to $65 million. With a reported $19 million budget, Girls Trip is proving to be very profitable counter programming for Universal. In fourth, Focus Features' Atomic Blonde, starring Charlize Theron and directed by David Leitch, finished below expectations at $18 million. The film carries a 74% rating on Rotten Tomatoes but could only muster a "B" CinemaScore from moviegoers. The long term prospects for Blonde do not look promising. Spider-Man: Homecoming rounded out the top five, netting $13 million for a 24-day total of $278 million.
