With an estimated $50.5 million on about 3,700 screens, Christopher Nolan's critically acclaimed World War II epic, Dunkirk, finished atop the weekend box office. IMAX showings were crucial, accounting for about 23% of the total, or approximately $11.7 million at 402 locations. It was the first time this summer that a non-franchise tent-pole movie was able to debut at number one, and the A- CinemaScore bodes will for a long and successful run.

Also enjoying a solid debut, Universal's Girls Trip opened with a stellar $30.37 million on 2,600 screens. The Queen Latifah/Jada Pinkett Smith led comedy had a budget of just $19 million, so this looks like a money maker for Universal and producer Will Packer.

Sony's Spider-Man: Homecoming dropped another 50% in its third weekend, finishing with $22 million, and a domestic cume of $251.7 million. The global total for Spider-Man is now at over $570 million. Fox's War for the Planet of the Apes took an unfortunate 64% drop in its second weekend and finished in fourth with an estimated $20.4 million. The film's domestic cume now stands at $97.7 million. In fifth place, STX's Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets looks to have been lost in Dunkirk's wake, grossing a mere $17 million from 3,553 locations. Valerian is reported to be the most expensive French production in history, and the poor showing in North America will severely hamper the film's ultimate profitability.

On an another note, Warner Bros.'s smash hit Wonder Woman finished in the top ten for the eighth weekend in a row. With another $4.6 million, WW has now grossed just shy of $390 million, making it the largest domestic release of summer. The total pushed past Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which currently stands at $387 million. The global total for Wonder Woman is now $780 million, with an opening in Japan still slated for August.
