In an exclusive interview with Variety, Jeffrey Katzenberg discussed his sweeping plans to up the game on short-form videos, creating a new entertainment category targeted specifically at 18-34 year-old mobile consumers. Katzenberg is aiming high, seeking $2 billion in initial funding to support the production of original content that is no more than 10 minutes long, but with studio-quality production values and talent. To help him in his quest, Katzenberg was spotted at the annual Allen & Co. Conference in Sun Valley, meeting with high powered executives such as Apple’s Tim Cook, YouTube’s Susan Wojcicki, and Verizon’s Tim Armstrong. No decision yet on whether such a service would be ad-supported or a paid subscription model, and there is currently no timetable for launch.
