With just two seasons remaining on HBO’s smash hit Game of Thrones, attention is already turning to the next big thing. A show that will likely get plenty of buzz is a new original series from the creators of GOT, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, called Confederate. The new drama will follow an alternate timeline in the United States in which the southern states successfully secede from the Union. According to the announcement, the story will follow characters on both sides of a “Mason-Dixon Demilitarized Zone” in a country where slavery was never abolished. The program will include freedom fighters, slave hunters, politicians, abolitionists, journalists and executives of slave-holding conglomerates as the plot moves toward a climatic Third American Civil War.
“We have discussed Confederate for years, originally as a concept for a feature film,” explained Benioff and Weiss in a statement. “But our experience on Thrones has convinced us that no one provides a bigger, better storytelling canvas than HBO." Production on Confederate is slated to begin after the Game of Thrones finale.
