Universal/Illumination’s Despicable Me 3 is expected to finish the five-day 4th of July holiday with about $98.9 million. The DM3 opening is well below Minions ($145.5M) and DM2 ($143M), and a bit better than the original Despicable Me movie, which brought in $72M in its first five days back in 2010. On a $80 million budget, DM3 will turn a nice profit for Universal, but the franchise is clearly not immune to the dreaded sequel fatigue hitting the industry this summer. On a rosier note, Sony's R-rated action-thriller Baby Driver exceeded expectations, racing to about $39 million in its first seven days of release. Conversely, Warner's The House needs a fixer upper, as the Will Ferrell/Amy Poehler comedy managed a dilapidated $11.9 million over the long 4th of July weekend.
